CIELO MARE TERRA 2024

Cielo, Mare, Terra continues to explore the relationship between diffused light and color. These works combine the rawness of reclaimed building materials, such as crates, pallets, & hardware, with the slickness of sanded clear and mirrored acrylic plexiglass panels. This juxtaposition, allows the viewer to experience these works very differently from up close examination to observation from a distance. My hope is that the viewer would feel compelled to get up close to examine my process and discover the layered approach to my works.

Cielo, Mare, Terra, refers to my observation of sky, sea and land during recent trips to Italy, Mexico, and the American West. The light as observed though experiencing cloud formations over the ocean, lakes, rivers at different times of the day captured via cell phone imagery. The usage of mirrors / combined with sanded ½” acrylic panels along with open framing sections allows the ambient light to reflect on the finished pieces.

OBSCURED 2019

This collection of mixed media paintings brings to life Tom's ongoing fascination with what lies beneath the surface. In a world consumed by a cacophony of words, symbols, politics, and religion, "Obscured" invites the viewer to come closer, peer past the facade, and discover the truth below.

The artwork starts with the discipline of a grid. Tom etches the surface of each panel with painted hash marks and builds depth by applying layers of acrylic paint, imbedding objects, chalk, wax and powdered pigment all on multi-ply wood box frames. At some points in creation, layers are removed and then possible reapplied, which expose the wood grain imperfections and create new textures. Some pieces take several months to complete, and others express themselves within a few weeks. Only when panels are coated with layers of cold wax, does Tom consider them done.

PASSAGES 2016-17

Tom Sandonato’s work explores the space between painting and sculpture. His mixed media pieces are painted on a variety of materials from simple cardboard, Masonite, plexi-glass, to hot rolled steel. Consistent in his work, is the desire to see beyond the two dimensionality of the painted surface to the nuances of what lies within. His methods include scratching and sanding through various layers of pigment, all within the confines of the grid. Pieces in the exhibition range in scale from 36 x 24 to 96 x 96.
